January Small Business Mix: Tax Tip for Small Business Owners

By Seanna Bowen – Wishert, Education Chairperson

On Thursday, January 28th, the West Indian Social Clubs hosted it’s first of a series of monthly programs designed for small business owners in the community. This month, the Small Business Mix focused on taxes and featured Desmond Collins of Collins Tax & Accounting Services. While discussing the theme of “Tax Tips for Small Business Owners”, Mr. Collins did an amazing job delivering the information in a manner that was easily understood by the audience. He talked about small business owners and the need for an accountant because of the complex nature of IRS requirements, the frequent changes in the tax codes, and the risk of errors and audits that an individual faces.

The audience of approximately 40 individuals remained engaged throughout the entire presentation and was eager to ask many tax related questions during the Q&A portion of the event. Mr. Collins provided informative answers to all the questions posed and a lively discussion regarding supporting business owners and providing quality customer service followed.

Marvin Sloley of VURVGraphix served as moderator of the event and did a commendable job guiding the program along. The attendees lingered and networked with each other following the event. The feedback since the event has been extremely positive. The guests were pleased to learn that the organization offers programs such as these networking events and pledged to return to the upcoming function. Some have even considered becoming members of the club! The next event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 25th and will focus on the theme “How to Choose your Legal Business Structure”. Attorney Thomas Ogar will be featured during this event.

The Committee would like to extend our gratitude to Desmond Collins for his excellent advice, VURVGraphix and Dorman Law Firm for their contributions, Joanna Gibson for the delicious food and hospitality, and all our attendees for supporting the event. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
