Hartford, CT – On Sunday, January 15th 2023, The West Indian Social Club of Hartford in collaboration with Wheeler Health kicked off its very first Wellness event for the 2023 season. This was the first of 9 monthly wellness seminars from January through September 2023 to include activities and expert discussion moderated by Dr. Gary A. Rhule, M.D. Topics range from nutrition and its effects on mental health to gun violence and its effects on mental health and more.
The January 15th seminar entitled: ‘What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?’ involved Yoga, Journaling and a conversation with Psychiatrist, Dr. Rhule on Seasonal Affective Disorder also known as S.A.D. Approximately ten individuals were in attendance as the WiSCOH disco room was temporarily transformed into a peaceful, dimly lit yoga studio. In the beginning, its participants did not know what to expect, but joined the group with open minds and willing hearts.
The afternoon began with yoga by Rudi Yoga Academy, which entailed beginner yoga movement and breathing techniques. Everyone in attendance had a yoga mat and listening ears as they were guided. By the end of the class, 30 minutes later, the room felt rejuvenated, energized and filled with positive energy. It was the perfect way to continue through the winter season.
Feeling mentally clear after an uplifting yoga session, the seminar then progressed into a journaling presentation. Participants were provided with journals, pens and sheets with tips on how to utilize the power of ‘writing down thoughts’. Everyone left this journaling session with practical and tangible tools to be used, as needed.
Just when you thought this was enough: Psychiatrist, Dr. Gary A. Rhule, M.D. ‘entered the chat’. He joined via Zoom to share facts and answer questions about Seasonal Affective Disorder (aka S.A.D.). He also included techniques and advice on how to overcome SAD. Participants then had a chance to win a $25 gift card by answering SAD related trivia questions, presented by Dr. Rhule.
It was an empowering, fun and engaging experience. One participant stated “It made me reflect on my own life and what I need to do to improve it. There’s always space to grow” – Giscar. Another participant stated “Wow – I needed that more than I even knew” – Zoe. “This event was a breath of fresh air within the community” – Dionne.
Join us for the next event on February 19th where Dr. Robatham, M.D. discusses how nutrition affects mental health, Yoga with Rudi Yoga Academy and Journaling with Sebii Sosa. “If you want to change the world, start with yourself” – Gandhi
